With the global interest in skateboarding on the rise, Shaun White is certainly a name you’ll have heard of. At 33 years old and with a height of 5 ft 8 in not only does he win big in skateboarding he is probably the most famous snowboarder too!

A fantastic role model to younger aspiring skateboarders and snowboarders, White was born with a congenital heart defect, but he never allowed it to stop him chasing his dreams.

White began snowboarding first of all, starting at just six years’ old. From the get-go his talent was clear, and he was quickly discovered by none other than Tony Hawk whilst skating in San Diego.

Over the course of his career, White has won countless titles in both sports. And one of the biggest accolades came in 2006 when he won his first Winter Olympic Gold. He then repeated the feat in 2010 and 2018. During the 2018 games he was the athlete to grab the 100th gold medal on offer! To add further notability to his career, White is the only athlete in history to have achieved a perfect 100, not once, but twice! He also olds the highest medal count overall, with 23 and counting. Of course, all of this has won him major plaudits and he has many voted for awards under his belt as a result including many ESPN awards.

All of this began with the basic childhood desire to copy your older brother – exactly what White wanted to do in San Diego when he first started snowboarding. As soon as he touched a board he decided he loved it and encouraged his famous to take him to the san Bernardino Mountains whenever they could go, so he could practice his skills! It didn’t take him long to start winning awards, as no sooner had White grabbed the attention of legendary Tony Hawk, but he was also winning his first snowboarding competitions.
